The Last Partera
As the Costa Rican government threatens to eradicate homebirth and midwifery, 95-year-old partera Doña Miriam and her protégée, nurse-midwife Rebecca Turecky, struggle to protect the tradition of women-centered healthcare. Together with a passionate community of mothers and maternal health professionals, they fight for women’s choice in childbirth and to preserve Doña Miriam’s legacy.
The film
“The Last Partera” has been nearly three years in the making, and we are eager to bring the film to life. Through a successful crowdfunding campaign, we raised more than $25,000 and inspired a following of more than 4,000 mothers, midwives, doulas, and others who are passionate about woman-centered healthcare. In addition, we recently received a small grant from the Southern Documentary Fund and extra funding from some generous individuals. However, making an international, bi-lingual documentary filmed over the course of three years requires even more. To complete the film in 2019, we need to raise an additional $15,000. Those funds will cover a final production trip to Costa Rica and the expenses required to finish editing.

Digital Screening of the Film ($50)
Get to know Doña Miriam, the inspirational woman at the center of our film, through an exclusive bonus video we've made to highlight her charm and wisdom. Anyone who contributes $50+ (tax-deductible) will receive the bonus video plus a digital (online) screening of the complete film before it is available for purchase by the public.
Copy of the Film + Bonus Features ($100)
In addition to receiving the exclusive bonus video now, anyone who contributes $100+ (tax-deductible) will receive a copy of the complete film with additional bonus features (your choice of digital download or DVD) before it is available for purchase by the public.
Film Lover’s Package ($250)
In addition to receiving the exclusive bonus video now, anyone who contributes $250+ (tax-deductible) will receive our special Film Lover’s Package, which includes a copy of the complete film with bonus features (digital download or DVD), a digital copy of the original film score composed by Beauty World, and an 11x17 masterprint of the official poster.
Turrialba Valley Package ($500)
In addition to receiving the exclusive bonus video now, anyone who contributes $500+ (tax-deductible) will receive not only our special Film Lover’s Package but also a set of six original 8x10 photographs from production in the beautiful Turrialba Valley.
Public SCreening Package ($1,000)
In addition to receiving the exclusive bonus video and the special Turrialba Valley package, anyone who contributes $1,000+ (tax deductible) will receive a public screening package that includes an additional DVD, five additional masterprints of the poster, and public screening rights to show the film to a group or organization. We will also highlight in our newsletter and on social media all contributors at this level and above. If you have benefited from the care of midwives or doulas, you could express your gratitude by contributing in their name and donating the public screening package to them or their organization.
Spotlight Package ($2,500)
In addition to receiving all the preceding rewards, anyone who contributes $2,500+ (tax-deductible) will be recognized as an Associate Executive Producer and receive two VIP passes to the film festival screening of your choice.*
We are also accepting corporate sponsorship from businesses that reflect our values and provide products or services to midwives or new families. Any business that contributes at this level will receive all the preceding rewards plus be acknowledged as a sponsor on the film’s website and have their logo displayed in the film’s credits.

Executive Sponsorship ($5,000)
Corporate sponsorship is reserved exclusively for businesses that reflect our values and provide products or services to midwives or new families. For a contribution of $5,000+ (tax-deductible), each Executive Sponsor receives all the individual rewards above, plus they will be acknowledged on the film’s website and in the film’s credits, and we will create a special thank-you video to be shared on social media and in our newsletter.
Red Carpet Sponsorship ($10,000)
Corporate sponsorship is reserved exclusively for businesses that reflect our values and provide products or services to midwives or new families. For a contribution of $10,000+ (tax-deductible), each Red Carpet Sponsor receives all the preceding individual and executive rewards, plus we will highlight the business’s sponsorship on social media every month over the course of the film’s first year of screenings.
Note: All contributors will be recognized in the film’s credits unless they express a desire to remain anonymous. They will receive their rewards after the film is complete but before the film is made available for purchase by the public. A contributor’s total contribution minus the estimated value of their reward(s) equals their tax-deductible donation.
